Repair vs Replace: When Should You Buy a New Computer?

It's a question we answer almost every day at Computer Corner in Leesburg: "Is it worth fixing, or should I just buy a new one?" It's a fair question, and the honest answer depends on several factors—the age of the computer, the cost of the repair, and what you actually need it to do.

We're in the business of repairs, but we're also committed to giving customers honest advice. Sometimes a repair is the clear winner. Sometimes replacement makes more financial sense. Here's a practical framework to help you decide.

The 50% Rule

A common rule of thumb in the repair industry: if the cost of repair exceeds 50% of the cost to replace the computer with a comparable model, replacement usually makes more financial sense. For example, if your 6-year-old laptop would cost $600 to replace and the repair costs $350, replacement is likely the better investment. If the repair is $150, fixing it is clearly worth it.

That said, this rule has nuances. Let's look at the factors that matter most.

Age of the Computer

Computer age is one of the most important factors. Here's a rough guide:

  • Under 3 years old: Almost always worth repairing, unless there's catastrophic damage
  • 3–5 years old: Repair usually makes sense for common issues (virus, slow performance, battery, screen)
  • 5–7 years old: Evaluate carefully—repairs can extend life significantly, but the hardware is aging
  • 7+ years old: Replacement is often the smarter investment, especially if software support is ending

Type of Problem

The nature of the problem matters a great deal:

Almost Always Worth Repairing

  • Virus or malware infection
  • Slow performance that can be addressed with a RAM or SSD upgrade
  • Cracked screen (if the computer is otherwise healthy)
  • Dead battery on a laptop
  • Software issues, corrupted OS, or failed updates
  • Broken keyboard or port

Evaluate Carefully

  • Failing hard drive (repair may be worthwhile if the computer is younger and higher-end)
  • Overheating issues (can sometimes be fixed with cleaning and thermal paste replacement)
  • Motherboard failure on a 4–6 year old machine

Often Points Toward Replacement

  • Motherboard failure on an older, lower-end machine
  • Liquid damage with multiple component failures
  • CPU or GPU failure where replacement parts cost more than a new machine
  • The computer can no longer run current software or receive security updates

Is the Computer Still Getting Security Updates?

This is a critical factor many people overlook. Windows 10 reaches end-of-life in October 2025 and will no longer receive security updates. If your computer can't run Windows 11 (which requires a newer processor with TPM 2.0), keeping it running after that date creates a growing security risk. In that scenario, even a computer in good working condition may be worth replacing.

The Value of What's On Your Computer

If your computer has important data on it, don't let the repair-vs-replace decision delay backing it up. Regardless of which direction you go, get your data off the failing drive first. Computer Corner can transfer your files and settings to a new computer or back them up to an external drive before any work begins.

When You Just Need an Honest Opinion

Sometimes the best thing you can do is bring your computer in for a professional assessment. Our $50 diagnostic fee at Computer Corner gives you a clear picture of exactly what's wrong and what it will cost to fix—so you can make an informed decision. If you decide to repair, that $50 is applied toward the cost. If you decide to replace, you'll know exactly what you're dealing with.

We've helped customers in Leesburg and across Lake County make these decisions honestly since 2012. We won't push you toward a repair that doesn't make financial sense, and we won't push you to buy a new machine when a $100 fix will serve you for another three years. Give us a call at (352) 460-1155 or stop by 205 W North Blvd, Leesburg, FL 34748.
